When is Mitch McConnell expected to return to the Senate?

Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) said on Sept. 3, 2026, that Sen. Mitch McConnell’s staff told him their goal is for the senator to be back when the Senate reconvenes on September 14 after the summer recess. Comer said he had not spoken to McConnell directly but hears regularly from the office.

McConnell, 84 and not seeking reelection, was hospitalized June 14 after a fall, later moved to rehab, and was discharged in early August to continue recovery at home. His office told CNN on Sept. 2 there were “no scheduling announcements at this time,” so Comer’s Sept. 14 timeline is staff-relayed expectation, not an official confirmation.
