Exit-poll projections on election night put Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) at about 44% of the vote in the Saxony-Anhalt state election on September 6, 2026 — more than double its 2021 share and well ahead of the CDU on roughly 18%.
That landslide still left the party short of a clear solo majority in early seat projections (around 39 of 83 seats, with 42 needed), so whether AfD can govern alone depends on which smaller parties clear the 5% threshold. Other mainstream parties maintain a “firewall” against coalition with AfD.
