Are boils life-threatening?

Usually no — a single small boil is a painful bacterial skin infection that often improves with warm compresses and home care, and Mayo Clinic notes you can usually care for one yourself.

Rarely, bacteria from a boil or carbuncle can enter the bloodstream and cause sepsis (blood poisoning), which can spread to deeper sites such as the heart or bone. Carbuncles (clusters of boils) are deeper and more severe than single boils and more often bring fever and feeling unwell.

See a doctor if a boil is on the face, worsens rapidly, causes fever, keeps growing despite self-care, has not healed in about two weeks, or recurs. Do not squeeze or lance a boil yourself.
