Did Colombia formally sever diplomatic relations with Iran in September 2026?

Yes. Colombia’s Foreign Ministry announced on September 24, 2026 that the government formally broke diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran effective September 19, 2026.

The ministry said the decision reflected national and hemispheric security concerns, citing alleged links between Iran’s government and international terrorist and narcoterrorist groups, documented human-rights abuses inside Iran, attacks on countries outside the Middle East conflict, the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, and obstruction of International Atomic Energy Agency verification of Iran’s nuclear program. It stressed that consular relations remain in place under the Vienna Conventions.
