What are the effects of drinking alcohol every day?

Drinking alcohol every day can affect many parts of the body, not only the liver. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), alcohol can disrupt brain communication pathways, raise stroke risk, weaken the heart muscle, contribute to high blood pressure and irregular heartbeat, and damage the gastrointestinal tract.

Over time, heavy or frequent drinking is linked to liver disease (including steatosis, hepatitis, fibrosis, and cirrhosis), a weaker immune system, pancreatitis, and several cancers—including mouth, throat, esophageal, liver, breast, and colorectal cancer. Current research also points to health risks even at low amounts of alcohol, regardless of beverage type.
