Yes. Phishing is a type of online scam in which criminals send emails, texts, or similar messages that impersonate a trusted company or person to trick you into sharing passwords, account numbers, Social Security numbers, or other sensitive information.
According to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), scammers often claim there is suspicious account activity, a billing problem, or a need to “confirm” personal details, then urge you to click a link or open an attachment. Those links can also install malware. Legitimate companies generally will not email or text a link asking you to update payment information.
If you receive an unexpected message like that, do not click. Contact the company through a phone number or website you already know is real, and report phishing to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
