There is no single Native American culture. The Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian notes vast cultural diversity among more than 2,000 tribal groups in the Americas, each with its own languages, social practices, arts, ceremonies, and customs.
Examples highlighted in Smithsonian programs and educational materials include peoples such as the Hopi; the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian of Alaska; the Iroquois Six Nations (Mohawk, Cayuga, Oneida, Onondaga, Seneca, and Tuscarora); and the Three Affiliated Tribes (Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara). Kinship, homeland, and intergenerational teaching remain central across these distinct nations.
