What are antipyretics used for?

Antipyretics are medicines used to reduce fever (elevated body temperature). Many also relieve pain; common over-the-counter examples include acetaminophen (Tylenol and others) and ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, and others).

According to Mayo Clinic, a care provider may recommend these nonprescription medications for a high fever or a fever that causes discomfort—especially fevers above 102 °F (38.9 °C)—while a low-grade fever may not need medication because it can help the body fight infection. Use labeled doses carefully, and do not give aspirin to children because of the risk of Reye’s syndrome.
