The S&P 500 tracks the stock performance of 500 large U.S. companies listed on American stock exchanges. Because a few of those companies have more than one share class in the index, it holds slightly more than 500 individual stocks. Members are chosen by a committee at S&P Dow Jones Indices, and the index is a subset of the broader S&P 1500.
