What is instantaneous speed?

Instantaneous speed is how fast an object is moving at one specific moment. In physics it is defined as the limit of average speed (distance divided by time) as the time interval shrinks toward zero.

A car speedometer shows instantaneous speed, while dividing a whole trip’s distance by its total time gives average speed. Instantaneous speed is the magnitude of instantaneous velocity, so it has no direction and is never negative.
