Low vision services, often called vision rehabilitation, help people whose vision loss cannot be fixed with glasses, contact lenses, medicine, or surgery make the most of the sight they still have. The U.S. National Eye Institute describes low vision as a vision problem that makes everyday activities such as reading, driving, recognizing faces, or seeing a screen hard to do. Common causes include age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and cataracts.
A low vision specialist can train you to use magnifying devices for reading, help set up your home so you can move around safely, adjust phone and computer settings for larger text, higher contrast, or read-aloud features, and point you to support resources. The usual first step is asking your eye doctor for a referral to vision rehabilitation.
