Can Airbnb hosts make guests strip the bed?

No. Under Airbnb’s updated house rules, hosts generally cannot ask guests to strip the bed, take trash offsite, or wash and put away dishes, because those are tasks a cleaner would normally do.

The new rules apply to all reservations booked on or after November 20, 2026. Airbnb’s reasoning is that guests already pay a cleaning fee, so they should not be asked to do work that takes significant effort or time. Hosts can still choose from seven standard house rules and add other requests that are “reasonable.” Airbnb says it may allow exceptions in some cases, such as asking guests to limit shower time when local drought rules restrict water use. Hosts cannot impose fines, and contracts are allowed only in limited cases, such as when a law or homeowners association requires one. House rules will be shown to guests more prominently and included in reservation reminders. If a host’s request breaks Airbnb policy, it will be flagged, and the host can appeal.
