Why is Uganda quarantining travelers returning from DR Congo?

Uganda is quarantining citizens who return from the Democratic Republic of Congo for 21 days to keep Ebola out of the country while DR Congo’s outbreak continues.

The health ministry announced the rules on Sunday, October 25, 2026. Returning Ugandans must quarantine at their own cost, travelers who have been to DR Congo may no longer transit through Uganda, and only essential travelers from DR Congo will be let in, under what Health Minister Chris Baryomunsi called “intense public health measures.” Screening has also been stepped up at Entebbe International Airport, at land borders and at road checkpoints. The move follows two Ebola cases, one in Kenya and one in Nigeria, in people who passed through Entebbe airport on the same day. More than 4,800 people have died in DR Congo since May, its deadliest Ebola outbreak. The outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo species, which has no approved vaccine or specific treatment yet. Uganda had 20 cases and two deaths early in the outbreak, but the World Health Organization declared it free of the disease in August.
