What are irritative voiding symptoms?

Irritative voiding symptoms are urinary symptoms that occur while the bladder is filling and storing urine, which is why doctors now usually call them storage symptoms. They are one of the main groups of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), alongside obstructive or voiding symptoms such as a weak stream, hesitancy, dribbling and incomplete emptying.

The classic irritative symptoms are increased urinary frequency, urgency (a sudden, strong need to urinate that is hard to delay), urge incontinence (leaking that follows urgency) and nocturia (waking at night to urinate). Painful or burning urination (dysuria) is often listed with them as well. Common causes include urinary tract infections, an overactive bladder, prostate enlargement or inflammation, bladder stones and, less often, bladder cancer or neurological conditions, so persistent symptoms should be evaluated by a clinician.
