Common symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome are numbness or tingling in the hand, especially the thumb and index and middle fingers. Symptoms often begin at night; people may also feel weakness, swollen or cold fingers, or an urge to shake the hand or wrist.
As symptoms worsen, they can occur during daytime activities and make it difficult to grasp small objects. Long-term cases can weaken the muscles at the base of the thumb.
