What is Slovenia’s last remaining glacier?

Slovenia’s last remaining glacier is the Skuta Glacier in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. Reporting based on Associated Press fieldwork published in mid-October 2026 says the country’s other glacier, on Mount Triglav (Slovenia’s highest peak), has completely melted away, leaving Skuta as the final patch of perennial ice.

Miha Pavsek of the Anton Melik Geographical Institute said Skuta has shrunk to about 1.5 hectares and thinned from tens of metres to only a few, with roughly 80–90% of its surface covered by gravel that offers limited protection while the ice still melts from all sides. Low winter snow followed by a very warm summer drove the latest loss.
