ChatGPT Slides: Power-User Guide to Creating, Sharing and Exporting Decks

Last updated: November 1, 2026

ChatGPT Slides, announced October 16, 2026, lets Pro, Business and Enterprise users build an editable presentation in ChatGPT Space from a chat, files or a template. You can edit slides directly or ask ChatGPT to change them, co-edit with teammates, present from ChatGPT, and export to PowerPoint, PDF or Google Slides.

What’s new: ChatGPT Slides at a glance

Until now, ChatGPT could generate a presentation file for you to download. Slides changes that. According to the ChatGPT release notes, the deck now lives in Space, where you and your team keep working on it with ChatGPT instead of starting over with each request.

Space itself arrived on September 29, 2026, replacing Library for accounts with access. Slides adds presentations to that workspace, alongside pages.

Who can use ChatGPT Slides

The OpenAI Help Center article on Slides lists availability on ChatGPT Pro, Business and Enterprise plans with Space access. If you do not see it, it may not have reached your account yet. For the difference between consumer tiers, see our ChatGPT Plus vs Pro comparison.

Windows has one catch. On devices without the required MXC component, local slide creation in the desktop app produces PowerPoint (.pptx) files instead of collaborative Slides. Windows 10 does not support the component, and Windows 11 users may need an update or for their organization to enable it. The fix is to use cloud mode or ChatGPT on the web.

For Enterprise admins, the ChatGPT Space admin guide says Slides uses the same access setting as Space and pages. Turning off sharing blocks new shares and permission changes, but existing shared access remains.

How to create a deck with ChatGPT Slides

OpenAI’s Space getting-started guide describes two starting points: ask ChatGPT in Work, or start in Space.

  1. Open ChatGPT Work on the web or in the desktop app.
  2. Ask ChatGPT to “create ChatGPT slides” and describe the topic, audience, goal and length. Use the current conversation or attach source files.
  3. Optionally attach an example deck or template so ChatGPT follows its style and layout.
  4. Open the editable deck in Space when ChatGPT finishes.
  5. Alternatively, go to Space, select Create > Slide, and start from a blank slide or a template.
  6. Check facts, charts and layout before sharing or presenting.

Wording matters. The Help Center notes that if you ask directly for a PowerPoint or Google Slides presentation, ChatGPT will provide that file type instead of a Slides deck.

Editing, templates and fonts

You can edit text, images, shapes, tables and charts directly in the deck. To have ChatGPT change one element, select it, choose Request edits, and describe the change. For deck-wide changes, such as shortening the story for executives, use the prompt bar. ChatGPT can also generate images or use visuals you upload.

Fonts depend on where you work. On the web, the font picker shows fonts available in your browser. On desktop, ChatGPT can use system fonts installed on your computer.

For repeatable branding, you can create your own templates with template-creator and share them with a team by including them in a team plugin.

Sharing and collaboration

The Space collaboration guide says decks are shared from their own sharing controls. Slides currently supports view and edit access. A separate comment-only role is not available, even though the product page mentions comment access.

People with edit access can change the same deck at the same time. Shared comments let you discuss feedback and @mention a teammate. You can also @mention ChatGPT, or your dot, to request a revision. Dots are OpenAI’s always-on agents; see our earlier coverage of the launch of OpenAI dots.

Presenting and exporting

You can present directly in ChatGPT with speaker notes. On the web, export options are PowerPoint (.pptx) to keep editing, PDF for a view-only copy, and Google Slides. In the desktop app, options to open the deck in PowerPoint or Keynote appear when those apps are installed, and on macOS you can show the file in Finder.

ChatGPT Slides vs ChatGPT for PowerPoint

OpenAI already offers a ChatGPT for PowerPoint add-in, which the release notes describe as generally available and usable from a sidebar inside PowerPoint. The two products fit different needs.

Feature ChatGPT Slides ChatGPT for PowerPoint add-in
Where you work ChatGPT Space (web and desktop app) Sidebar inside Microsoft PowerPoint
Plans Pro, Business, Enterprise with Space Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu and K-12
Team co-editing Built in, with shared comments and @ChatGPT Uses PowerPoint’s own sharing
Output Live deck, exportable to .pptx, PDF or Google Slides Slides that remain editable in PowerPoint
Caveats Comment-only role not available; Windows MXC requirement Advanced edits and template matching may need review

If your team lives in PowerPoint, the add-in avoids a format round trip. If you want ChatGPT and colleagues revising one shared deck, Slides is the better fit. Google users may also want our Gemini app October updates guide for a competing assistant.

Prompt patterns and limitations

OpenAI’s ChatGPT Slides product page and the getting-started guide offer prompts that work well as patterns:

  • Bounded first draft: “Create an 8-slide quarterly business review in Space using these notes and metrics. The audience is our leadership team. Cover results, risks, and decisions needed. Use the attached deck as a style reference, preserve the source numbers, and flag missing information.”
  • Audience pass: “Adapt this deck for executives, focusing on key results, business impact, and decisions needed.”
  • Data to visuals: “Turn the metrics in this deck into editable charts that highlight trends and comparisons.”
  • Feedback loop: “Update this deck based on my team’s comments, keeping the formatting consistent.”
  • Rehearsal: “Add speaker notes to each slide with talking points and transitions.”

Limitations to plan around:

  • Not available on Free, Go or Plus.
  • Editing slide elements directly requires the web or desktop app; mobile is limited to creating through conversation and viewing.
  • No comment-only role at launch.
  • OpenAI has not published a slide-count limit or a separate Slides price in the pages cited here.
  • The admin guide warns that pages, files and tool results may contain prompt injections, so review decks built from outside material.

Frequently asked questions

What is ChatGPT Slides?

ChatGPT Slides is a presentation editor inside ChatGPT Space. ChatGPT builds an editable deck from a conversation, files, an outline or a template, and you and your teammates can then edit it directly, ask ChatGPT for changes, present it or export it.

When did ChatGPT Slides launch?

OpenAI announced ChatGPT Slides in its ChatGPT release notes on October 16, 2026. It is rolling out gradually, so some eligible accounts may not see it yet.

Is ChatGPT Slides available on the Free or Plus plan?

No. OpenAI lists Slides for ChatGPT Pro, Business and Enterprise plans with Space access. Free, Go and Plus users can use the separate ChatGPT for PowerPoint add-in instead.

Can I export ChatGPT Slides to PowerPoint or Google Slides?

Yes. On the web you can export a deck to PowerPoint (.pptx), PDF or Google Slides. In the desktop app you can open the deck in PowerPoint or Keynote if either app is installed.

Why does ChatGPT create a .pptx file instead of a Slides deck on Windows?

On Windows devices without the required MXC component, local slide work in the desktop app uses PowerPoint files. Windows 10 does not support it. Switch to cloud mode or use ChatGPT on the web.

Can I give someone comment-only access to a deck?

Not at launch. OpenAI’s documentation says Slides currently supports view and edit access, and a separate comment-only role is not available yet.
