Antigravity CLI is the terminal client of Google Antigravity. It matters more now because Google’s Gemini CLI release notes page says that for unpaid-tier and Google One users, Gemini CLI was replaced by Antigravity CLI on June 18, 2026, and that Gemini CLI has not been optimized for Gemini 4 Argon. Details below come from the official Antigravity changelog.
What’s new in Antigravity CLI
These are the most useful changes in each October release:
| Version | Date | Key changes |
|---|---|---|
| 1.3.0 | Oct 6 | Default verbosity changed to medium, Vim-style j and k in /diff |
| 1.3.3 | Oct 10 | Pinned prompt header while scrolling, MCP tools that can be marked always loaded, macOS sandbox blocks ~/Library/Application Support by default |
| 1.3.5 | Oct 14 | Auto mode on Linux and macOS, new /compact command, syntax highlighting and folding in /diff |
| 1.3.6 | Oct 15 | Claude Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 for Application Default Credentials sign-in, automatic retry after a 5-minute model stall |
| 1.4.0 | Oct 16 | Terminal status reporting over OSC 7501, alt+m to send or queue a message, agy plugin validate with –strict and –json |
| 1.4.4 | Oct 21 | Auto mode on Windows 11 24H2 and later, whole-file toggle and hunk folding in /diff |
| 1.4.5 | Oct 22 | Idle CPU use roughly halved, jittered cron schedules, fix for endless retries after content-safety blocks |
| 1.4.6 | Oct 23 | Configure MCP servers for installed plugins, sandbox blocks ~/.docker, ~/.kube and ~/_netrc, attachments kept through compaction |
| 1.4.9 | Oct 28 | Native image paste and drag-and-drop, per-site approvals for sensitive Google apps |
| 1.4.10 | Oct 29 | About 70% fewer bytes streamed to the terminal, about 100 MB of startup memory returned, images capped at 2000 pixels per side |
Auto mode and the terminal sandbox
Auto mode, added in 1.3.5, approves file edits and safe commands without asking and still prompts before irreversible actions. Commands that would leave the terminal sandbox are first reviewed by a separate agent. Version 1.4.4 brought it to Windows 11 version 24H2 and later for personal Google Accounts, per the changelog.
- Update the CLI so
agy --versionreports 1.4.10 or later. - Start a session with
agy --mode auto, or open/configand set Agent Mode to Auto. - Press Shift+Tab during a session to cycle modes and check the indicator in the status bar.
- Use
/permissionsto set rules for commands you always want handled one way; those rules take precedence over the mode. - Grant sandbox access explicitly if your commands need Docker or Kubernetes credentials, since 1.4.6 blocks ~/.docker and ~/.kube by default.
Version 1.4.7 asks less often for routine commands such as running a formatter, and 1.4.8 stops any single slow review check after 10 seconds.
Compaction and long sessions
Version 1.3.5 added /compact. On its own it summarizes the conversation and ends the turn; followed by a message, it summarizes and then answers. Version 1.4.6 keeps attached images, PDFs and other files in the summary. Version 1.4.10 fixes subagents losing their task after a compact. Compare our Claude Code power-user guide and Codex CLI 0.166 guide.
The rebuilt /diff viewer
/diff was the most frequently updated feature in October. It gained syntax highlighting and folding (1.3.5), / search (1.4.3), a whole-file toggle with f and hunk folding with Ctrl+O (1.4.4), word-level highlights (1.4.6), and [ and ] to jump between turns (1.4.8). The Commit Tree now shows 100 commits instead of 10.
Plugins and MCP
agy plugin validate now checks a plugin with the same rules the CLI uses to load it, and supports --strict to fail on warnings and --json for CI reports (1.4.0). Version 1.4.1 added checks for skills, subagents and rules. In 1.4.6 the /plugin panel gained a Configure MCP servers row. MCP servers can mark a tool as always loaded with _meta: {"antigravity/alwaysLoad": true} (1.3.3).
Migrating from Gemini CLI
The Gemini CLI migration guide says the first run of agy detects legacy settings and offers a checklist of assets to convert. You can also run agy plugin import gemini to turn extensions into native plugins. The main path changes are:
| Setting | Gemini CLI | Antigravity CLI |
|---|---|---|
| Workspace skills | .gemini/skills/ | .agents/skills/ (move manually) |
| Global skills | ~/.gemini/skills/ | ~/.gemini/skills/ or ~/.gemini/antigravity-cli/skills/ |
| Global MCP servers | Inline in ~/.gemini/settings.json | ~/.gemini/config/mcp_config.json |
| Workspace MCP servers | Inline in settings | .agents/mcp_config.json |
| Remote server URL key | url or httpUrl | serverUrl |
| Rules files | GEMINI.md, AGENTS.md | Unchanged |

Models and plan quotas
The Antigravity models page lists Gemini 3.8 Flash on every plan. Gemini 4 Argon requires a paid Google AI Pro plan (or an eligible device trial), Ultra or Enterprise; our Gemini 4 Argon guide covers the model. Claude Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 are listed for paid Pro, Ultra and Enterprise. Claude Sonnet 4.6, Claude Opus 4.6 and GPT-OSS-120b were marked for removal on November 2, 2026.
According to the Antigravity plans page, accounts without Pro or Ultra get a quota refreshed weekly. Google AI Pro quotas refresh every five hours until a weekly limit, and Ultra gets the highest quota and weekly limits. Pro and Ultra users can buy AI credits for overage, and there is no bring-your-own-key option. Our comparison of Google AI Pro vs Ultra explains the plans. In the CLI, /credits shows your balance and the useG1Credits setting controls overage use.
Practical workflows
- Unattended batch work. Combine Auto mode with headless
-pruns, which use much less CPU since 1.4.7 because they skip the search index and transcript rendering. - Prompt screening. Hooks receive
lastUserInputon stdin since 1.4.7, so a hook can check a prompt before the agent acts. - Review before commit. Open
/diff, switch to Per Turn, and use [ and ] to review each turn’s edits.
Known limitations
- Auto mode requires the terminal sandbox, so it is unavailable on Windows 10 and on Windows 11 before version 24H2.
- Antigravity does not support bring-your-own-key or custom endpoints for extra rate limits.
- Workspace skills are not converted automatically and must be moved by hand.
Frequently asked questions

How do I turn on Auto mode in Antigravity CLI?
Start the CLI with agy –mode auto, choose Auto under Agent Mode in /config, or press Shift+Tab to cycle modes. Auto mode arrived on Linux and macOS in version 1.3.5 and on Windows 11 version 24H2 and later in version 1.4.4.
Is Antigravity CLI free?
Yes, every plan, including accounts without Google AI Pro or Ultra, gets a baseline quota that covers the CLI. Free accounts get a quota refreshed weekly. Google AI Pro and Ultra quotas refresh every five hours up to a weekly limit, and Ultra gets the highest quota and weekly limits. Pro and Ultra users can also buy AI credits for overage use.
Which models can I use in Antigravity CLI?
Model access depends on your plan. Gemini 3.8 Flash is available on every plan. Gemini 4 Argon needs a paid Google AI Pro plan, Ultra or Enterprise. Claude Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 are listed for paid Pro, Ultra and Enterprise. Claude 4.6 models and GPT-OSS-120b were scheduled for removal on November 2, 2026.
How do I move my Gemini CLI extensions to Antigravity CLI?
Run agy for the first time and pick the assets to convert in the onboarding checklist, or run agy plugin import gemini to convert extensions into native plugins. Then move workspace skills to .agents/skills/ and MCP servers into mcp_config.json.
