Zed Agent: Power-User Guide to the October 2026 Releases

Last updated: November 2, 2026

The Zed agent gained several practical upgrades in October 2026. Stable releases 1.23.2 through 1.26.2 added context compaction for external agents, GPT-6 Astra and Claude Opus 5.5 on Amazon Bedrock, Gemini 4 Argon, drag-in terminal tabs for the Agent Panel, better model pickers, and many fixes for agent threads.

Contents

Zed is an open-source code editor from Zed Industries. Its AI features run in the Agent Panel, where you can use Zed’s own agent or connect outside agents such as Claude Agent, Codex and Gemini CLI. Facts below come from the official Zed release notes on GitHub and Zed’s documentation.

What’s new in the Zed agent

These are the AI changes in each October stable release (dates in UTC):

Version Date AI and agent changes
1.23.2 Oct 7 Fixes for stale agent responses, missing tool output and OpenAI tool calls to MCP servers
1.24.2 Oct 14 Drag Terminal tabs into the Agent Panel, custom Amazon Bedrock models with configurable tool use, images and thinking, lower memory and CPU use in long threads
1.24.3 Oct 19 Gemini 4 Argon added to the Google AI models
1.25.2 Oct 21 Context compaction and session notices for external agents using ACP; GPT-6 Astra, Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Opus 5.5 on Amazon Bedrock
1.26.2 Oct 28 Fuzzy search in model and option pickers, ACP defaults that apply only to new conversations, clearer thinking controls, fixes for subagent thread hangs

Next up, preview build 1.27.0-pre (October 28) writes AI commit messages in the style of your three latest commits, per the releases page.

How to set up the Zed agent

The Agent Panel documentation describes this first-run flow:

  1. Install or update Zed to 1.26.2 or later so you have every October change.
  2. Open the Agent Panel with agent: new thread from the Command Palette, or click the sparkle icon in the status bar.
  3. Configure a model for Zed Agent through LLM Providers (Zed-hosted models, your own API key, a subscription, a gateway or a local model), or install an external agent.
  4. Type your request and press Enter. Add context with @ mentions for files, directories, symbols, past threads, skills, diagnostics, branch diffs and URLs.
  5. Review the edits with Review Changes, accept or reject each hunk, and use Restore Checkpoint to undo a whole turn.

External agents and the ACP Registry

External agents connect through the Agent Client Protocol (ACP). The External Agents documentation lists Claude, Codex, OpenCode, Copilot, Cursor and Pi Coding Agent as common choices, with Gemini CLI and Poolside also covered. Install them from the ACP Registry with zed: acp registry, or from Agent Settings under External Agents, Add Agent, Install from Registry.

Each external agent owns its own login and billing. An Anthropic key set up for Zed Agent does not configure Claude Agent, and an OpenAI key does not configure Codex. Zed does not charge for external agents. One exception: if Gemini CLI finds no Gemini key of its own, Zed passes the key from its Google AI provider as GEMINI_API_KEY.

Version 1.26.2 applies ACP configuration defaults only to new conversations, so reopened threads keep their settings. Version 1.25.2 fixed prompts stalled by unneeded Git checkpoints and hid secrets passed to agents in remote projects from the local process list.

For agent-specific background, see our Claude Code power-user guide and the Codex CLI 0.166 guide.

Compaction and long threads

Zed Agent automatically compacts long threads as they approach the token threshold. It summarizes earlier messages, shows a Context Compacted entry you can expand, and accepts /compact for a manual run, according to the Agent Panel docs. If a model’s context window is under 80,000 tokens, Zed shows a banner instead, and you can choose New From Summary to continue in a fresh thread.

The 1.25.2 release extends compaction and session notices to external agents using ACP. A long Claude Agent or Codex session no longer has to end when its context fills, if the agent supports it.

New models and providers

  • Amazon Bedrock: GPT-6 Astra, Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Opus 5.5 (1.25.2), plus custom Bedrock models with configurable tool use, images and thinking (1.24.2).
  • Google AI: Gemini 4 Argon (1.24.3). See our Gemini 4 Argon guide for the model itself.
  • OpenCode: better handling of DeepSeek reasoning replay and Claude adaptive thinking (1.26.2).
  • OpenAI-compatible providers: Mistral Large 4 responses fixed, and duplicated thinking text removed (1.26.2). Background on the model is in our Mistral Large 4 guide.

Local models remain an option through Ollama, LM Studio and other OpenAI-compatible servers. Our Ollama October 2026 guide covers the newest Ollama releases.

Practical workflows

  • Run a CLI agent beside a chat thread. Since 1.24.2, drag a Terminal tab into the Agent Panel to keep a CLI session beside your threads.
  • Steer instead of waiting. Messages sent while the agent works are queued. Toggle Steer on a queued message so Zed Agent reads it at its next step.
  • Isolate parallel work. Run several threads from the Threads Sidebar (cmd-alt-j) and put one in its own Git worktree when two threads might edit the same files.

How October compares with September

The last September stable release, 1.22.0 (September 30), added an optional model parameter for spawning subagents, compaction for subagents, and Grok 4.7 for the xAI provider. October builds on that:

Area September (1.22.0) October (1.23.2 to 1.26.2)
Compaction Zed Agent and subagents Also external agents using ACP
Models GPT-6.1 Sol with your own key, Grok 4.7 Gemini 4 Argon, GPT-6 Astra, Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Fable 5.1 on Bedrock
Terminal Terminal Threads Existing Terminal tabs can be dragged into the Agent Panel
Stability External-agent terminal fixes Subagent restore hangs, slow ACP prompts and long-thread CPU use fixed

Plans and pricing

Zed’s pricing page lists three plans:

  • Personal, $0: unlimited use with your own API keys or external agents.
  • Pro, $10 per month: Zed-hosted models, unlimited edit predictions, $5 of tokens included, then usage at API list price plus 10%. A 14-day trial includes $5 of GPT-6 Luna usage with no credit card.
  • Business, $30 per seat per month: org-wide AI model policies, data governance controls, unified spend visibility and role-based access. Seats do not include AI credits.

Known limitations

  • Some Agent Panel features, including thread restore, checkpoints and token display, depend on each external agent’s integration.
  • Steer works only with Zed Agent, because Zed cannot detect turn boundaries for external agents.
  • Zed Agent profiles and Zed Skills do not apply to external agents.

Frequently asked questions

What is new in the Zed agent in October 2026?

Zed’s October stable releases (1.23.2 to 1.26.2) added context compaction and session notices for external agents that use ACP, GPT-6 Astra, Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Opus 5.5 on Amazon Bedrock, Gemini 4 Argon for Google AI, terminal tabs you can drag into the Agent Panel, and many agent stability fixes.

Is the Zed agent free?

Zed’s Personal plan is $0 and allows unlimited use with your own API keys or external agents such as Claude Agent and Codex. Zed Pro costs $10 per month with $5 of hosted-model tokens included, then usage-based billing at API list price plus 10%.

What is the difference between Zed Agent and external agents?

Zed Agent is Zed’s native agent and uses the models, tools, profiles, skills and MCP servers you configure in Zed. External agents such as Claude Agent, Codex, Gemini CLI or OpenCode connect over the Agent Client Protocol and usually own their own login, billing, models and tools.

How do I add Claude or Codex to Zed?

Open the ACP Registry with the zed: acp registry command, or go to Agent Settings, choose External Agents, click Add Agent and pick Install from Registry. Then start a thread with that agent from the Agent Panel and sign in through the agent’s own login flow.

How does compaction work in Zed?

Zed automatically compacts long Zed Agent threads as they near the token threshold by summarizing earlier messages. You can also type /compact. Since version 1.25.2, external agents that use ACP can also use context compaction and show session notices.
