Are African wild dogs endangered?

Yes. The African wild dog (Lycaon pictus) is classified as Endangered. The IUCN Canid Specialist Group reports an estimated 6,600 adults in 39 subpopulations, including about 1,400 mature individuals, and says the population is declining because of habitat fragmentation, conflict with people and infectious disease. The species has disappeared from much of its former range, although its largest remaining populations are in southern and eastern Africa.
