Are revenues the same as sales?

Not always. In everyday business language people often treat revenue and sales as the same “top line,” but they are not identical concepts.

Sales usually means money earned from selling goods or services to customers. Revenue is broader: it includes those sales plus other income from the business, such as non-operating items like investment income or gains from selling assets.

For a simple retailer that only sells products, the two numbers can look almost the same. For companies with multiple income streams, reported revenue can exceed sales alone.
