Are Roth IRA contributions tax deductible?

No. Roth IRA contributions are not tax deductible. The IRS states plainly that Roth IRA contributions aren’t deductible on your federal income tax return. You put in after-tax money, so there is no upfront deduction like the one that can apply to a traditional IRA.

The trade-off is on the way out: qualified Roth distributions can be tax-free, and Roth IRAs are not subject to lifetime required minimum distributions for the original owner. Deductibility rules for traditional IRAs depend on income and workplace plan coverage; those limits do not create a deduction for Roth contributions.
