Are triggerfish aggressive?

Sometimes. Triggerfish can become aggressive when guarding a nest. Gray triggerfish, for example, scoop out nests in the sand and lay tens of thousands of eggs during the summer spawning season, and the adults guard the nest from predators, including divers who swim too close.

Triggerfish have small mouths with strong jaws and chisel-like teeth built to break into hard-shelled prey such as sea urchins, crabs, and clams, so a defensive bite can hurt. Outside of nesting, the safest approach is simply to give any triggerfish hovering over a sandy nest plenty of room.
