Can axolotls eat crickets?

They can swallow them, but crickets are not a recommended axolotl food. PetMD, in a veterinarian-reviewed feeding guide, says insects with hard exoskeletons such as crickets, waxworms, and hornworms should be avoided because an axolotl’s digestive system struggles with the hard parts and the animal may have trouble passing them.

Axolotls are carnivores that swallow prey whole, and wild ones do eat insects. For pet axolotls, the guide recommends soft foods instead, such as earthworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and soft axolotl pellets.
