Yes, Claude can train on your data if you allow it on a consumer plan: Anthropic may use chats and coding sessions from Claude Free, Pro and Max accounts, including Claude Code sessions, when the “Help improve our AI models” setting is on. By default, it does not train on data from commercial products such as Claude for Work and the Anthropic API.
As of October 29, 2026, you can turn this off on the web, desktop or mobile app by opening Settings, selecting Privacy and switching off “Help improve our AI models.” Anthropic then stops using new and stored chats in future training, but data already in a training run or trained model stays.
Exceptions remain: chats flagged for safety review may still be used, and conversations you rate with the thumbs up or down button are stored for up to 5 years and may be used for training. Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude. If training is on, de-identified data may be kept for up to 5 years.
