On September 10, 2026, AFP reported that European Copernicus satellite images from the prior two days showed brownish streaks on the water about 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) off the Iranian coast east of the Strait of Hormuz, after U.S. strikes on tankers suspected of links to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.
Satellite images alone cannot prove hydrocarbons with certainty, but experts including CLS’s Vincent Kerbaol and Conflict and Environment Observatory researcher Leon Moreland told AFP the features were highly likely oil slicks. Two of the tracks began where the tankers Riesco and Kylo last transmitted signals before being sunk.
