Yes. On September 28–29, 2026, South Korea’s military announced preliminary findings from a joint investigation with the United Nations Command that North Korean antipersonnel land mines were highly likely the cause of a September 21 explosion inside the Demilitarized Zone. The blast severely injured two South Korean soldiers and lightly injured a third during a path-clearing operation south of the Military Demarcation Line.
Lt. Gen. Kwon Dae-won, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said forensic residue including TNT and brown synthetic material, along with the crater, flame patterns, and injuries, pointed to North Korean plastic-resin mines rather than South Korean types. Officials said final results would follow further joint investigation, and that Seoul would take corresponding measures if North Korean responsibility is confirmed.
