No. Miami International Airport does not use an Engineered Materials Arresting System (EMAS) on the runway involved in the September 6, 2026 Amazon cargo overrun. The airport said runway 12/30 already provides the full 1,000-foot Runway Safety Area the FAA requires, and EMAS is generally installed where space prevents that full unobstructed safety area.
EMAS beds use crushable material that sinks aircraft tires to slow an overrun. Nearby Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport does use EMAS. NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said investigators are examining whether the absence of EMAS at Miami mattered in the crash, which sent the Boeing 767 about 1,300 feet past the pavement.
