A virtual private network (VPN) installs a client on your device that encrypts your internet traffic and sends it through a secure tunnel to a remote VPN server. That server then forwards your requests to websites and other services, so sites see the VPN server’s IP address instead of yours, and your ISP or anyone on the same network mainly sees an encrypted connection to the VPN rather than which sites you visit.
