How fast is IonQ’s new quantum entanglement link?

IonQ announced on October 9, 2026 that it achieved entanglement rates above 1,000 events per second (1 kHz) between a trapped-ion qubit and a solid-state silicon-vacancy (SiV) quantum memory, linked through a photonic interconnect.

The company says that is more than four times faster than the previous record for trapped ions, held by Chris Monroe’s group at Duke University, which collaborated on the paper. Fast entanglement links like this are a key step toward networking separate quantum computers together.
