The Golden Gate Bridge is about 8,981 feet (2,737 m) long from abutment to abutment, or roughly 1.7 miles. Its main span between the two towers is 4,200 feet (1,280 m), which was the longest suspension span in the world when the bridge opened in 1937.
The towers rise 746 feet (227 m) above the water, and the bridge carries U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1 between San Francisco and Marin County.
