At least 139 migrants died after an overcrowded boat capsized off Djibouti on the night of October 8–9, 2026, according to the UN migration agency (IOM), and 84 people were still missing as of October 11. The boat was carrying 305 people from Djibouti toward Yemen when it went down near Guehere, north of the port town of Obock; about 82 people survived.
The death toll rose from an earlier count of 109 after 30 more bodies were recovered, and search and recovery efforts were continuing. IOM described it as one of the deadliest shipwrecks recorded on the Eastern Route, which runs from the Horn of Africa to the Arabian Peninsula.
