A soccer team has 11 players on the field at a time, one of whom must be the goalkeeper. The Laws of the Game allow a match to start only if each side has at least seven players.
Teams also name substitutes; most top-level competitions now allow up to five substitutions per match, so a full matchday squad is usually larger than 11.
