Air sacs in the lungs are called alveoli. When you breathe in, air travels through the airways into clusters of these tiny sacs, where gas exchange takes place: oxygen moves into the blood and carbon dioxide moves out to be exhaled.
The NHLBI notes that the lungs have about 150 million alveoli. They are elastic and coated with surfactant so they can expand and contract easily during breathing.
