What are horned lizards?

Horned lizards are the North American lizard genus Phrynosoma, often called “horny toads” or “horntoads” even though they are reptiles, not toads. The names come from the horn-like spines on their heads and their flattened, rounded bodies and blunt snouts.

There are 21 species, 15 of them native to the United States; the Texas horned lizard is the largest-bodied and most widespread. Several species can squirt an aimed stream of blood from the corners of their eyes, up to about 5 feet, to deter predators, and some collect rainwater along their skin channels to drink.
