What are ICD-10 codes?

ICD-10 codes come from the 10th revision of the International Classification of Diseases, a medical classification list published by the World Health Organization. The codes identify diseases, signs and symptoms, abnormal findings, complaints, social circumstances, and external causes of injury.

ICD-10 took effect in WHO member states on January 1, 1993, and WHO replaced it with ICD-11 on January 1, 2022, though many countries still use national ICD-10 versions (such as ICD-10-CM in the United States) for billing and records.
