Inherited traits are usually called hereditary traits, and the process of passing them from parents to offspring is called heredity (or biological inheritance). They are carried by genes, segments of DNA that offspring receive from their parents.
Examples include eye color, blood type, and many inherited disease risks. The complete set of observable traits an organism shows is its phenotype, while its genetic makeup is its genotype.
