Track events are the running races contested on the oval at a track-and-field meet. At championship level they typically include sprints (100, 200, and 400 meters), middle- and long-distance runs (800, 1,500, 5,000, and 10,000 meters), the 3,000-meter steeplechase, hurdles (men’s 110 meters and 400 meters; women’s 100 meters and 400 meters), and relays such as the 4×100-meter and 4×400-meter.
These races are distinct from field events (jumps and throws), which are held inside or beside the track. Outdoor track races usually use a 400-meter oval; World Athletics sets the rules and recognizes world records for the standard programme.
