What happened in the downtown Minneapolis shooting?

On Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 2, 2026, a mass shooting at Loring Towers (also called Shoreline Plaza) at 15 East Grant Street in downtown Minneapolis left three people dead — two residents and the suspected gunman — and injured three police officers plus three other civilians.

Authorities identified the suspect as Carlton Neal Johnson II, 35, a ninth-floor resident who was facing eviction after prior firearm threats at the building. Residents killed were Dale Henry Spry, 63, and Muse A. Afrah, 61. Police said Johnson died of multiple gunshot wounds after exchanging fire with officers on the ninth floor; a motive has not been released.
