SynthID is Google DeepMind’s technology that embeds an invisible, durable digital watermark into AI-generated images, audio, video, and text when the content is created, without changing how it looks or sounds. On October 15, 2026, TIME named Google SynthID one of its Best Inventions of 2026.
Google says SynthID has watermarked more than 180 billion images and videos and the equivalent of 240,000 years of audio. Verification tools appear in Google Search, the Gemini app, and Chrome, and a SynthID Detector can check content from Google and partners.
