Who bought Neil Armstrong’s boyhood home in Wapakoneta, Ohio?

Neil Armstrong’s boyhood home at 601 W. Benton St. in Wapakoneta, Ohio, is being acquired by the Auglaize County Historical Society, paid for by a $400,000 donation from Ken Schreiber, a retired U.S. Air Force and American Airlines pilot who grew up in Dayton. The Associated Press reported that the sale was scheduled to be finalized on Monday, October 19, 2026.

The two-story house went on the market in August 2026 for the first time in nearly 40 years; its previous owner, retired history teacher Karen Mikesell, had owned it since 1988. Armstrong lived there as a teenager, built model planes and a basement wind tunnel there, and earned his pilot’s license at 16. The historical society plans to restore the house to its 1940s appearance and open it for public tours by 2030, the 100th anniversary of Armstrong’s birth.
