Are Amish Americans?

Yes. Nearly all Amish people live in the United States, so in everyday terms they are Americans. The Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies at Elizabethtown College estimates the Amish population of North America at 421,200 as of June 2026, with communities in 33 U.S. states and three Canadian provinces. Almost 60 percent of that North American population lives in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Indiana.

Amish people born in the United States are U.S. citizens under the Fourteenth Amendment; religious practice does not change citizenship. Smaller Amish populations also live in Canada and, in limited cases, Latin America.
