Are woodpeckers songbirds?

No. Woodpeckers are not songbirds. Encyclopædia Britannica classifies the roughly 180 species of true woodpeckers in the subfamily Picinae of the family Picidae, within the order Piciformes. Songbirds belong to a different order, Passeriformes (the passerines, or perching birds).

The difference shows in their bodies and habits. Most woodpeckers have zygodactyl feet, with two toes pointing forward and two backward, plus stiff tail feathers that brace them against tree trunks. Instead of singing, they mark territory in spring with loud calls and by drumming on hollow wood.
