Codex CLI 0.167.0 (GitHub rust-v0.167.0, November 5–6, 2026 UTC) adds codex agents --no-daemon, cross-backend session switching that keeps drafts, local image previews, a Google Cloud Vertex AI setup wizard, and experimental system proxy support. Here is how to upgrade and use the new controls.

What’s new in Codex CLI 0.167.0

Codex CLI is OpenAI’s Apache-2.0 terminal coding agent. The official 0.167.0 release notes highlight:

  • Agent command center: codex agents --no-daemon, with unread markers in the center and session picker.
  • Cross-backend switching: change connected backends from the picker and keep drafts.
  • Local image previews: composer thumbnails on supported terminals, plus clickable viewed-image paths.
  • Sign-in submenu: API key and cloud providers under “Sign in another way,” including a Vertex AI wizard behind gcp_setup_wizard.
  • System proxy: opt in from /experimental on macOS or Windows.
  • Inline patch review: expand patch details while an approval prompt is open.

Bug fixes keep saved chats visible after provider changes, preserve history when Ctrl+L clears the display, close network approvals when requests end, and improve context compaction when token usage data is missing. For the October baseline, see the Codex CLI 0.166 power-user guide.

How to update to Codex CLI 0.167

The Codex CLI docs and openai/codex README list these paths. Rerun the installer to update.

  1. macOS/Linux standalone installer: curl -fsSL https://chatgpt.com/codex/install.sh | sh. Windows: README PowerShell install.ps1.
  2. Or npm: npm install -g @openai/codex@0.167.0.
  3. Or Homebrew: brew install --cask codex.
  4. Run codex in a project, confirm the version in the header and with /status.
  5. Restart the background server from /daemon if an older build is still connected.
  6. Open codex agents --no-daemon and confirm unread markers after a background task finishes.

Use the agent command center

Pull requests 58238 and 58239 enable the command center for embedded sessions so you can switch chats without a shared app-server daemon.

  • Run codex agents --no-daemon when you want the center without the daemon path.
  • Clear unread sessions from the picker after side tasks finish.
  • Switch backends from the picker; drafts stay available (#58280, #58457).
  • Archiving or deleting an embedded session returns you to the command center instead of exiting the TUI.

Related multi-session patterns appear in our Claude Code 2.1.318 guide and Antigravity CLI 1.5 guide.

Vertex AI and other sign-in paths

0.165 added a built-in Vertex AI provider. 0.167.0 adds a guided TUI wizard behind gcp_setup_wizard, disabled by default (pull request 57857).

[features]
gcp_setup_wizard = true

Start Codex, choose Sign in another way, then Use Google Cloud Vertex AI. Enter a project ID, optional location, and optional credential file; leave the file blank for Application Default Credentials.

OpenAI auth still centers on ChatGPT sign-in or an API key per the authentication docs. API-key sign-in covers local CLI, SDK and IDE work but excludes cloud features such as GitHub code review.

For OS proxies, enable System proxy under /experimental or run codex features enable respect_system_proxy, then restart. The setting stays off by default (pull request 58157).

Plans, models and limits

OpenAI’s Codex pricing page includes the CLI on Plus ($20/month), Pro ($100/$200/$500), Business, Enterprise and Edu with ChatGPT sign-in. Free and Go list GPT-6 Luna in the desktop app only. Work and Codex share usage.

Plus and Standard Business local-message estimates every five hours: GPT-6 Luna 350–3,000, GPT-6.1 Terra 35–285, GPT-6.1 Sol 15–160, GPT-6 Astra 5–45. Pro has no five-hour limit; weekly limits may apply. Check /status or the usage dashboard. See Codex usage limits, Is Codex free?, and the GPT-6.1 Terra guide.

Power-user workflows

  • Background triage: start long tasks, open codex agents --no-daemon, clear unread sessions.
  • Multi-cloud day: keep ChatGPT, Vertex and Bedrock connected; switch from the picker with drafts intact.
  • Visual bugs: attach a screenshot and confirm the composer thumbnail before sending.
  • Safer approvals: expand the patch in the transcript while the approval prompt is open.
  • Proxy laptops: enable system proxy once, restart, then use codex doctor --network-only if needed.

Limitations

  • The Vertex wizard is opt-in (features.gcp_setup_wizard defaults to false).
  • System proxy support is experimental, described for macOS/Windows, and off by default.
  • Image thumbnails need a capable terminal.
  • API-key sign-in excludes cloud integrations on the pricing feature matrix.
  • 0.168.0 builds were still pre-release alphas when 0.167.0 shipped; prefer the stable tag.

Frequently asked questions

What is new in Codex CLI 0.167.0?

Codex CLI 0.167.0, tagged rust-v0.167.0 on GitHub on November 5–6, 2026 (UTC), adds an agent command center opened with codex agents –no-daemon, unread markers, cross-backend switching that keeps drafts, local image previews, a Vertex AI setup wizard behind features.gcp_setup_wizard, system proxy support under /experimental, and inline patch review during approvals.

How do I open the Codex agent command center without a daemon?

Update to 0.167.0, then run codex agents –no-daemon. The release notes say this opens the agent command center and that unread results appear in the command center and session picker. The earlier 0.166 guide noted that –no-daemon was not supported; that limitation is gone in 0.167.0.

How do I enable the Google Cloud Vertex AI setup wizard?

In ~/.codex/config.toml set features.gcp_setup_wizard = true. The flag is disabled by default per pull request 57857 in this release. Start Codex, choose Sign in another way, then Use Google Cloud Vertex AI. Enter a project ID, optional location, and optional credential file; leave the file blank for Application Default Credentials.

Which ChatGPT plans include Codex CLI?

OpenAI’s Codex pricing page lists Codex in the CLI for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu when you sign in with ChatGPT. Free and Go list GPT-6 Luna in the desktop app only. An API key also works for local CLI, SDK and IDE use at API rates, without cloud features such as GitHub code review.

How do I turn on macOS or Windows system proxy support?

Open /experimental and enable System proxy, or run codex features enable respect_system_proxy, then restart Codex. Pull request 58157 says respect_system_proxy stays disabled by default and that doctor’s macOS proxy guidance points to the same path.

How does 0.167.0 compare with Codex CLI 0.166.0?

0.166.0 (October 29, 2026) added transcript search, queue –resume, doctor –network-only and Terra in more catalogs. 0.167.0 adds a usable agent command center for embedded sessions, multi-backend draft-preserving switching, richer image handling, a Vertex onboarding wizard, system proxy support and safer network approvals. See the Codex CLI 0.166 guide for the October set.
