Does Codex train on your code?

Yes, OpenAI can use your Codex code to train its models if you use Codex on a personal ChatGPT plan (Free, Plus or Pro) and leave the “Improve the model for everyone” setting on, because OpenAI’s Help Center says it may use content from services for individuals to train its models. With ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or Edu, or through the API, OpenAI says it does not use inputs or outputs to improve its models by default.

As of November 3, 2026, you can opt out by turning off Improve the model for everyone under Settings, then Data controls, in ChatGPT, or by selecting Do not train on my content in the OpenAI Privacy Portal. OpenAI says either option covers Codex tasks, and it applies to new tasks after you opt out.

Two exceptions matter. Codex has a separate Include environments setting that controls whether additional context from your Codex environments can be used for training, and the ChatGPT opt-out does not change it. Also, if you give thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback on a personal plan, OpenAI may use the entire conversation tied to that feedback for training.
