The Grand Canyon in Arizona is more than a mile (over 1.6 km) deep at its deepest points below the rim. Carved by the Colorado River, the canyon is 277 miles (446 km) long and up to 18 miles (29 km) wide. It is not the deepest canyon on land, though: Nepal’s Kali Gandaki Gorge is much deeper.
