What are industrial designs?

An industrial design is the ornamental or aesthetic look of a product: its shape, configuration, surface pattern, color, or a combination of these, in two or three dimensions. It covers how an item looks rather than how it works.

Many countries let creators register an industrial design right, a form of intellectual property that gives exclusive protection to that appearance for a limited term. Functional features are protected by patents instead, not design rights.
