The Eagle’s Nest (Kehlsteinhaus), Adolf Hitler’s former mountaintop retreat above Berchtesgaden in Bavaria, was badly damaged by a fire on the night of Friday, October 23, 2026, and local media reported that it had been “largely destroyed.”
Dispatchers received a fire alarm from the building at 21:15 local time, and firefighters found it engulfed in flames. About 200 emergency personnel were deployed, difficult mountain terrain hindered efforts to put out the blaze, and no injuries were reported. Police detained a 33-year-old German man riding a motorcycle near the scene and opened a criminal investigation; his possible motive is still being examined, and police said there is no evidence of other suspects. Completed by the Nazis in 1938 at an elevation of about 1,800m (5,900ft), the building survived the end of World War Two and later became a popular tourist destination housing a mountain inn. Bavaria’s Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann said the site would “under no circumstances remain a ruin.”
