Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany collapsed at the club’s training ground on Friday, October 23, 2026, while watching the club’s second team train, and was taken to hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.
The 40-year-old former Manchester City and Belgium defender had been unwell with a virus and missed Bayern’s pre-match news conference on Tuesday before their Champions League game against Arsenal, although he was on the touchline for Wednesday’s match. Bayern’s director of sport, Max Eberl, said examinations were continuing and that recovery would be measured in “not days, but weeks,” with no timeframe set until the cause is known. Eberl added that the club would try “to protect him from himself.” Assistant coach Aaron Danks has spoken with Kompany in hospital and said football operations are in the staff’s hands, and Bayern chose not to ask for Sunday’s Bundesliga game at Freiburg to be postponed. Kompany took over at Bayern in May 2024 and has led them to successive Bundesliga titles.
