Who are the Estonians?

Estonians are a Finnic ethnic group native to the Baltic Sea region of Northern Europe, mainly the country of Estonia. They speak Estonian, a Finnic language closely related to Finnish, Karelian and Livonian rather than to the Baltic or Slavic languages of their neighbors, and some South Estonian communities also speak Võro and Seto.

There are about 1.1 million ethnic Estonians worldwide, roughly 926,000 of them living in Estonia (2023 figure), with the largest diaspora communities in Finland, the United States, Sweden and Canada. Historically Lutheran, most Estonians today are not religious, and the Song Festival held in Tallinn since 1869 remains one of the strongest symbols of their national identity.
